I had an incredible half-day fly fishing experience outside of Kanazawa on the Asano River with Naoto from K-Samurai Tours. Though it was a relatively short drive from Kanazawa, it felt like we had escaped the city entirely and entered a quieter, more traditional side of Japan. The scenery was beautiful, the river was peaceful, and the entire experience felt authentic and deeply relaxing. If I get the opportunity to go again, which I hope I do, I’d opt for the full day trip to go even further into the countryside and surrounding mountains and explore even more productive Yamame and Iwana fly fishing water.
Naoto was outstanding — knowledgeable, patient, and clearly passionate about both fly fishing and the local environment. Whether helping with technique, choosing flies, or explaining the history and culture he made the trip memorable far beyond just the fishing itself.
If you are visiting Kanazawa, or any other region that Naoto operates in, and are a fly fisherman or just want an experience that goes beyond the usual tourist itinerary, I cannot recommend this trip enough. It was one of the highlights of my time in Japan.

Our historical samurai tour in Kanazawa was incredibly informative and gave us a much deeper understanding of the city’s history from a local perspective. The experience would not have been the same without Naoto as our guide.
He explained how Kanazawa Castle was carefully designed for defense, from stone-dropping traps to windows used by archers; and helped us understand the social hierarchy of the time, from merchants and samurai to the shogunate. One of the most fascinating details we learned was that some swords were even said to have been made using material from meteorites!
Naoto brought the history to life by connecting each place we visited with its historical purpose and context. We’re very grateful for his knowledge, enthusiasm, and guidance. Thank you, Naoto, for such a memorable and educational tour!
